Coupleshots - By Aivy Yong

Dear Brides to Be,

Does this sound familiar??

Bride to Be : Hi, we are getting married !!

People : OMG !!! Congrats !!! so when are u gonna take your wedding pics?? where ?? Which bridal house/studio are you engaging ?? Have you found one yet? My friend did her destination wedding pictures at Maldives and Santorini and they were gorgeous!!! why don't you do that too??

I am almost always dumbfounded when people fuss over pre wedding pictures. Aren't wedding pictures meant to be taken on the day of the wedding and not before? and those destination weddings pics, shouldn't the couple be the focus in the picture instead of the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben or the clear blue sea ??? the couples are so tiny in the pic, I really don't see the point. Am I alone? So imagine what comes next .....

Me the Bride : We don't plan to take pre wedding pictures. Will use the pics taken by the photographer on the day itself. :)

People : GASP?!! *silence*....BUT WHYYYYY?????

Me the Bride : *repeated the reasons above*

Guess what follows??

People : *nodded but wasn't really listening*  You know, my friend X and Y and Z, they had their wedding pictures taken by so and so and so and it doesn't cost a bomb......do you want their contact? I can get it for you.......

Me the Bride : *ANNOYED*

Cost is not the issue, we just chose not to. It's the commercialisation of 'pre wedding pictures' by bridal houses and packaging it to look like it's the most important aspect of a wedding and then charge a bomb for mediocre work that we find a turn off.

Engaging a bridal shop by paying them a handsome amount of money and then be at their mercy and cringe through every page of the wedding album which shouts "hi, I am LIAN and this is my husband BENG" just don't cut it for me.

Perhaps I am a rebel. But I refuse to conform to what is "expected" by many. I just can't do something blindly (in this case engaging a bridal house and taking pre wedding pictures) just cause others are doing it. I bet you others don't really know why they did it too. They probably did it cause other couples were doing it.

Don't get me wrong.

I do love Photography. And to me, every photo has a story to tell and only a good photographer can capture its heart and soul.

But hiring a renowned photographer who can deliver all that only to have the album stored underneath the bed for years also doesn't make sense to me.

And as F-A-T-E has it, my makeup artist, Aivy Yong, who is also a freelance photographer was looking at building her portfolio. She is one of those rare gifted ones who is still undiscovered by many.
